In Art this half term we are learning to weave. Today we looked at weaving different materials. It was challenging because we had to make sure the materials went over and under the warp.
This half term the children in year one have been showing great behaviour and being kind and helpful to friends and adults. In return they have been collecting and saving their leaves. We put the leaves onto our class tree. The children voted to save the time they had earnt and collectively had 45 minutes of their own time. A popular choice was to enjoy the sunny weather outside at Moneyhole Park. We all had a great time!
In Literacy and DT we have been making fruit salads and writing instructions.
It is National Science Week and the focus for this year is 'change'. This week we are looking and observing lots of different scientific changes. Have a look at who we have been up to!
The past two weeks in year 1 we have been learning poetry. We made a magic box which let us explore different places... the beach, a snowstorm and a forest. We used our senses to help us write poetry. We are all so proud of our writing!
Thank you to everyone for joining in and dressing up for World Book Day - you all looked fantastic!
We had a visit from a scientist called Steve. He showed us lots of different experiments with different materials. We launched rockets into the air, looked at how sounds are different and even made gooey slime!
This week we have been looking at how we can stay safe when we use the computer. We read a story about a penguin called Smartie who explained what we should do if something funny pops up on the computer. We wrote letters to Smartie to tell him what we have learnt. We focused on using capital letters and full stops in our writing. To do this we used rainbow writing! We had to use a different coloured pen to write each sentence.
In Maths we have been using numicon to help us understand what 'double' and 'half' of a number means. We have also tried to convince our learning partner which numbers we can share equally and which numbers we can not.
In Literacy we have been learning how to write non-chronological reports. We focused on Emperor Penguins and learnt a lot of different information about them. We used different texts and watched videos to help us write our reports.
In Art we have been looking at the work of a famous artist- Pablo Picasso. We have looked carefully at the colours he uses and the shapes he creates. This week we used paint to create our own Picasso picture.
Today we were crazy Christmas Scientists and we took part in lots of different experiments. Have a look at the amazing video of the fizzing snow experiment!
On International Day we learnt about Germany. We looked at similarities and differences between how Christmas is celebrated in Germany and in England. We learnt that in Germany, children clean their shoes and leave them outside their door ready for St Nicholas. We also learnt about traditional German foods eaten during Christmas. After that we decorated our own gingerbread men with icing and sweets!
Thank you to Izyan's mum for making some traditional food from Bangladesh for us to try.
This week in PE we used our co-ordination skills to work in teams and try lots of different activities.
Have a look at some of our pictures!
On Friday the 11th November 2016 we went on a school trip to Paradise Wildlife Park. We saw lots of animals and spoke about what food the animals eat and whether that makes them a herbivore, omnivore or carnivore. After we had walked around the animals we went to the Jungle Theatre to watch an animal show. We also watched a bird show and found out lots of really interesting information!
In RE we have been learning about Diwali. We used clay to make our own Diva Lamps and then painted them in lots of different colours. We even added glitter! Soon we will be putting a tea light inside the Diva Lamps so we can light them.
In Maths this week we have been learning how to subtract numbers. We have used pictorial representations to help us.
In Computing we have been learning to create digital images. This week we focused on creating a moving image!
In Geography we have been learning about weather. We have learnt how to draw weather symbols and how to look carefully at a map to explain what the weather is like!
This week in Literacy the children have been learning about Space.
They used play-dough to create their own alien and created a digital image of their alien on the computer too. From this the children were able to describe their alien using adjectives.
We even tasted some Space food! The children compared the Space ice-cream to Earth ice-cream using their senses to write a comparison.
In PE the children listened to some Space music and created a dance where the astronauts met the aliens on the Moon.
